st. john's red storm

St. John’s Gets by Rutgers, Barely

Perhaps “barely” is too harsh: The Scarlet Knights, after all, didn’t lead once in last night’s game. But they hung around just enough to scare the Johnnies, tying the score at 56 on Robert Lumpkins’s three with 16.3 seconds remaining. But Justin Brownlee, playing with a broken left thumb, saved the day, taking an inbound pass at the foul line with 6.4 seconds remaining, driving past the aforementioned Lumpkins, and laying the ball in with his left hand to break the tie. As Will pointed out earlier in the week, St. John’s may not be able to afford to lose any games to the small number of Big East teams that aren’t currently projected to make the tournament. Last night was one of those games, and they took care of business. Next up: their final nonconference game of the regular season, in Los Angeles against UCLA.
