Mark your calendars for Wednesday night, folks: That’s when Brooklyn’s Long Island University — winners of twelve straight and 20 out of their last 21 — will play for the Northeast Conference championship and a spot in the NCAA’s field of 68. After holding off Central Connecticut, 69–67, in yesterday’s semifinal, the Blackbirds will meet third-seed Robert Morris — winners of the conference’s last two automatic bids — in the title game. Here’s what we wrote in January of last year, upon visiting LIU’s Wellness, Recreation, and Athletic Center on our NYC College Hoops Road Trip: “Considering NEC tournament games are held at the arena of the higher seed, we are crossing our fingers for an NEC title game on ESPN2, on the LIU campus.” A year later, we’ve gotten our wish.
