For the third-straight game, the Yankees set the new Yankee Stadium’s low-attendance mark last night, with an announced crowd of 40,331. (Last night’s game and Sunday’s game were the first at the new ballpark with an attendance below 41,000.) Just to put that in perspective, though, other teams are experiencing attendance issues at this early stage in the season, as well, and most clubs would be delighted to draw “only” 40,000 fans. (On Sunday, for example, the Indians drew 8,726 for the win over the White Sox.) Those who made it to the park last night, by the way, saw the Yankees defeat the Twins, 4–3, for their third win in four tries this season. (River Avenue Blues calls attention to some wild stats regarding the Yankees’ dominance over the Twins lately. Our favorite: During the Ron Gardenhire era — which dates back to 2002 — Minnesota’s won just two games in the Bronx that weren’t started by Johan Santana. And that includes playoffs.) Ivan Nova got through six, allowing three runs and six hits, then turned the ball over to the bullpen, the back end of which continues to impress. Perhaps they’ve finally found a role for Joba Chamberlain?
