The Rangers-Capitals series takes a second day off today, which means an extra day to practice, respond in a pretty tame manner to all of Bruce Boudreu’s quotes, and take care of some more superstitious playoff-facial-hair grooming. The Times has already said pretty much everything that needs to be said about the mustaches of Brandon Dubinsky and Brian Boyle. (“He looks hilarious,” said Boyle of Dubinsky.) But it’s three that makes a trend, and so Bryan McCabe’s decision to trim down to a Fu Manchu officially makes this a trend. (Said McCabe, who’d told Dubinsky he’d do it if No. 17 scored a goal: “I’m a man of my word … Could be someone else’s turn next, let’s hope the trend continues.”) We’re pretty sure — like, 80 percent sure — that lucky facial hair won’t be the deciding factor in this series, but it’s worth a try, we think. (For the record: Henrik Lundqvist and Brandon Prust said they’re sticking with full beards, while Ruslan Fedotenko has said he’ll shave regularly, as he did when he won Cups with Tampa Bay and Pittsburgh. These are important matters, obviously.) More on Game 4 — with less talk of mustaches, we promise — tomorrow. [Blueshirts Blog/NYDN]
