Their winless start to the season was fun while it lasted, but the Red Sox topped the Yankees, 9–6, on Opening Day at Fenway Park today. After Phil Hughes lasted just two innings (allowing six earned runs, seven hits, and two walks, while striking out none), the Yankees rallied back and tied the score at six on an Alex Rodriguez home run in the fifth. But Boston would add a run in the bottom of that inning, and J.D. Drew’s two-run single off Boone Logan in the seventh added some breathing room. Alfredo Aceves, Bobby Jenks, Daniel Bard, and Jonathan Papelbon each threw a scoreless inning to protect Boston’s first win of the year, in their seventh game.
