You may recall the articles back in January about how Nets tickets were available for absurdly low prices on the secondary market — selling for as low as 82 cents for a game against Cleveland and at one point being offered for as little as eleven cents. But that was for a game midway through a lost season, between the Nets and the dreadful Cavaliers — two teams, at that point, with a combined record of 20–67. We bring this up because today, the Times ran a similar article on the state of secondary-market Mets tickets. On the one hand, it’s not a good sign that such articles — ones with lines like, “But for the average fan, who does not often get the opportunity to sit in premium box seats in a new ballpark, the Mets’ misery is a windfall” — are appearing already, with more than a week left in April. (The numbers from the article, if you’re curious and/or looking to buy: $69 for seats directly behind home plate, and for the less picky, less attractive seats for as little as $3.) Having said that, the phenomenon of cheap baseball tickets is hardly limited to Citi Field: Seats are available for next Wednesday’s Yankees-White Sox game in the Bronx for as little as $2.89, and the Yanks are in first place. So perhaps those prices say less about the Mets than they do about attending games in New York, in any ballpark, on an April weeknight against a nonrival. [NYT]
