Neither David Wright nor Jose Reyes — both mentioned by name in the Fred Wilpon New Yorker article — chose to fire back at the owner, but at least one of their teammates had what will pass as a funny response. Said Mike Pelfrey (quite possibly the pitcher who “tends to dawdle on the mound”): “It’s a mistake and you learn from it. Maybe next spring when we have our media workshop for the players, Fred can come and sit in on it.” Zing? Sure, why not. Speaking of player responses, a reporter yesterday asked Derek Jeter — who was not mentioned by name in the article, on account of his, you know, not playing for the Mets — about his thoughts. Said Jeter, clearly aware that he’d gotten himself involved with last week’s New York baseball drama: “I’ve got nothing to do with that, buddy,” adding, “Don’t drag me into this one, too.” [NYT via Hardball Talk]
