That’s not how she frames it, of course, but in this interview with AM New York, Jorge Posada’s wife reminds the interviewer — during a back-and-forth about the Subway Series — that after the 2007 season, if she remembers correctly, the Mets wanted to give Posada a five-year contract worth something like $17 million more than the four-year deal he ended up signing with the Yankees. (We bet she remembers correctly, too: This Daily News article from that November cites Mets sources that say that “Omar Minaya has identified Posada at the top of the team’s list of free agent targets” and that “Minaya might be willing to go above and beyond to secure the rights of a possible Hall of Famer.”) We honestly don’t mean to pick on Jorge — he’s approaching 40; he’s not supposed to be able to hit like he did in his prime — and for what it’s worth, his OPS+ since 2008 is an above-average 114. But when you factor in Posada’s performance thus far in 2011, and the Mets’ financial uncertainty, and the fact that the National League doesn’t use the designated hitter, the Mets dodged a bullet on that one, didn’t they?
