One Mets game — the one against the Braves on September 21, 2001, in which Mike Piazza hit his memorable home run — had already become a part of the story of 9/11, or more accurately, about the story of New York post-9/11. And now last night’s game — at least to those inside the ballpark and to those watching from home — has become part of it all as well, if only in a “you’ll remember where you were when you heard the news” sort of way. Plenty of Mets bloggers — who’d surely intended when the night began to simply chronicle the third game in a Mets-Phillies series — ended up with a lot more to write about. At least one tried to force an awkward comparison between the two events. (From MetsOnline.com: “As corny as it sounds, tonight’s game was symbolic of our nation’s victory. Osama Bin Laden was the symbol for anti-American terrorism and his death really changed the world. Like the fight against terrorism, the Mets fought tonight.”) But at least one other, Jason Fry over at Faith and Fear in Flushing, nailed it, writing about how he heard the news last night, about his own memories of 9/11 and the months after, and, yes, about a baseball game. We’d encourage you to give that one a read.
Mets Bloggers Had More Than Baseball to Write About Last Night
