The Mets Fall to the Freak

Did you know that, until yesterday, Tim Lincecum had never won a game in New York? Sure, he’d done this to the Mets in San Francisco, but he’d been winless in two starts at Shea Stadium and earned a no-decision in his one previous start at Citi Field. The key phrase in all of that, of course, is “until yesterday.” Lincecum, hitting 95 on the gun, struck out twelve Mets in seven shutout innings last night — even striking out the side in the bottom of that seventh inning. (In doing so, he set the franchise record for most double-digit strikeout games, passing Christy Mathewson. As NBC Bay Area points out, take a moment to appreciate that: Mathewson, after all, is a charter member of the Hall of Fame, and Lincecum is in just his fifth freakish season.) The Giants won, 2–0, and, uh-oh, that’s five losses out of six for the Mets.
