The first update of this year’s American League All-Star balloting is out, and two thirds of the starting spots are currently occupied by Yankees. Robinson Cano leads all Yankees with more than 1.18 million votes — he’s second only to outfielder Jose Bautisa among American Leaguers — and has more than twice as many votes as Dustin Pedroia, the nearest second baseman. Derek Jeter, Mark Teixeira, and Alex Rodriguez lead at their respective infield positions, as well, while Russell Martin has the most votes among American League catchers, no doubt thanks largely to Joe Mauer’s injury woes. Curtis Granderson, meanwhile, is second among A.L. outfielders, between Bautista and Josh Hamilton. That leaves just three Yankee regulars who wouldn’t be voted onto the team if balloting ended today: Jorge Posada (who’s third among designated hitters), Nick Swisher (seventh among outfielders), and Brett Gardner (eleventh among outfielders).
