Joe Girardi made the announcement this afternoon: Chamberlain — who’d been placed on the fifteen-day DL yesterday, and who hadn’t reported severe pain — has a torn ligament in his right elbow. Girardi said that Chamberlain has passed every strength test, but that a dye contrast MRI revealed the problem. Said Girardi, when asked whether Chamberlain would need surgery, which would cause him to miss the rest of this season and part of next season: “I don’t know how you avoid it.” [LoHud Yankees Blog, NYDN, NYT]
