We still maintain that a walk-off balk — like the one that cost the Mets a game in Atlanta last week — is about the strangest way to end a baseball game, if only because it leads to the unusual sight of a player celebrating in the batter’s box without having really done anything. That said, a walk-off-hit by pitch — like the one that forced in the game-winning run for the Mets in last night’s thirteen-inning marathon at Citi Field — is pretty odd, as well. You can watch the video here, and see Justin Turner, well, turn ever so slightly into the path of the pitch, then call the ump’s attention to his thigh, which had been grazed by said pitch. (Actually, he said after the game that it hit him in the uniform.) Not to be overlooked, by the way: R.A. Dickey’s eight outstanding innings of three-hit, one-run, nine-strikeout ball. He earned a no-decision, however, after Francisco Rodriguez blew his second consecutive save, allowing the Oakland run in the top of the ninth that sent the game to extra innings in the first place.
