Mets Rally, Win, Keep Terry Collins’s Head From Exploding

So here’s the situation that the Mets found themselves in this afternoon: Less than 24 hours after Terry Collins erupted both in the clubhouse and in front of the media following an ugly loss to the Pirates, they fell behind 7–0 to Pittsburgh after just two and a half innings. If this is how Collins reacted last night, one can only imagine how he’d have reacted if the Mets responded by getting blown out the very next afternoon. But then Carlos Beltran hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the third, they scored four more times in the sixth to tie the game, then added two more runs to take a 9–7 lead in the eighth. Collins was particularly upset about how his team has squandered leads late in games this year, but they’d hold on to this one: After allowing a lead-off triple to Xavier Paul and a two-out RBI single to Neil Walker in the bottom of the ninth, Francisco Rodriguez got Lyle Overbay to foul out to end the game.
