Even with the NFL off-duty with its lockout, and the NBA about to be, the sports landscape can still be awfully crowded for fans: There’s just lots of input to keep track of. So you can take U.S. men’s soccer off the radar for a bit, if you hadn’t already. The USMNT lost 4–2 to Mexico on Saturday in the Gold Cup final, sending the excellent Mexico team to the 2013 Confederations Cup. It’s debatable how much the Gold Cup really matters, but certainly, this wasn’t the breakthrough for U.S. soccer many were hoping for. (The good news: Freddy Adu lives!) Next up: World Cup qualifying! That has already started at the lower levels, but the U.S. team won’t have to start worrying about it until late next year; their first qualifying matches aren’t until after the presidential election. So relax, take your time, enjoy some baseball, you’re not missing anything. Though if you want to watch the Women’s World Cup, Team USA opens play against North Korea tomorrow. The U.S. should win, though the North Korean media should report that the U.S. lost 34–1 anyway.
