The Yankees’ Strange Homestand Ends This Afternoon

The Yankees’ current homestand — the one that began with three discouraging losses to Boston — has now seen them win five out of six games against Cleveland and Texas, both first-place teams in their respective divisions. Their 5–4 record through nine games isn’t particularly unusual, but it’s safe to say this past week hasn’t gone exactly how the Yankees intended it to go. Joba Chamberlain, Bartolo Colon, and Derek Jeter all have gone on the disabled list over the past seven days, and today, someone named Brian Gordon will take the ball as they try to sweep Texas after taking the first two games of this series by matching 12–4 scores. (Gordon, by the way, is a converted outfielder who has appeared in three big-league games — all for Texas in 2008 — and more than 1,200 minor-league games in his fifteen-year professional career.) A week ago, it appeared that today could be Derek Jeter’s only real chance to maybe get his 3,000th hit at home, but that chase is on hold for now, as well. It’s been a strange week for the Yankees, and watching a career minor leaguer — one who’s been with the organization for just a couple of days — take the mound today will make it all the stranger.
