The Mets offense has done its job the last few days: They scored 26 runs over the final three games of their four-game sweep of Cincinnati; Lucas Duda and Jason Bay both doubled with the bases loaded in yesterday’s 10-9 win; David Wright got three more hits yesterday, and is now batting .455 since coming off the DL; and Daniel Murphy picked up his tenth hit of the series to remain third in the National League in batting. (Hey, who needs Carlos Beltran, right?!) But a thousand miles away, in Port St. Lucie, the Mets got some good pitching news: Johan Santana threw to real, live hitters in an actual baseball game yesterday, making his first rehab outing since getting hurt last September. He threw three scoreless innings against the Daytona Cubs, striking out three while giving up two hits and hitting a batter. (Of his 33 pitches, 26 were strikes.) But more importantly, he said he felt good afterwards, and was able to throw all his pitches without any issues. If all goes well, he could pitch again on August 3, and could potentially be back with the Mets at the end of next month. [Bats/NYT, TCPalm.com]
