Sean Avery, the human being who plays for the New York Rangers, has had a rough month. There was that Russian-language interview that quoted a former teammate as saying that Avery had used a racial slur (the former teammate later denied saying such a thing), and there was also that whole being-arrested-on-charges-of-shoving-a-cop business. But at least Sean Avery, the horse, is having a nice month. You may recall equine Sean Avery from his win in the Longfellow Stakes back in June, and from the “Sean Avery scores!” call that accompanied it. Well, yesterday, Sean Avery won the $250,000 Grade I Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap at Saratoga. The longest shot in the eight-horse field, Sean Avery paid $36.20 on a $2 bet.
