It Seems That Dwight Gooden Parade Story Wasn’t All That New

We’ll be honest: We’d never heard Dwight Gooden tell the story about why he missed the Mets 1986 victory parade until yesterday, when ESPN previewed its E:60 interview with Gooden online. But it seems Gooden had indeed told similar stories before — on more than one occasion, actually, including in detail once on WFAN’s Boomer and Carton in the Morning show. Of course, ESPN hadn’t mentioned that either, and today a spokesperson offered up an apology to Newsday’s Neil Best: “We weren’t aware of some of the interviews he had done. We shouldn’t have positioned it that way. We apologize for that mischaracterization.” Oh, and there’s this, too, also via Best: Boomer and Carton intimated that Mike Francesa intentionally ignored their Gooden interview and gave ESPN credit for the story when discussing it on the air. But Francesa said today on the air that this wasn’t the case: “I wasn’t not crediting them on a story; I wasn’t even aware he was on the air with them.” [Newsday]
