There were two bits of Mariano Rivera news yesterday. Well, that’s not really accurate: One bit was news, and the other was more of a reminder of something we already knew. First, the news: Rivera said that his vocal cords have been bothering him for a month, and that he might need to have surgery. Then there was the reminder of something Yankees fans already knew, but would rather not think about: Rivera said that he didn’t know what would happen when his current contract expires at the end of the 2012 season. Via the Post: “I have one year left. I might call it over. I will know more in spring training.’’ Now, obviously, there’s always been the possibility that Rivera will call it a career at the end of this contract. After all, the man will turn 42 at the end of this month. And so it’s no surprise that he said he doesn’t know how things will play out yet, even if he did just turn in another great season. But, still, as much as we know that “I might call it over” is a long way from “I will call it over,” hearing Rivera himself say it is more than a little scary. [NYP]
