Banner Day was once a Shea Stadium tradition in which fans would be invited onto the field between games of a doubleheader to parade around with homemade signs. (See video from 1983 here, or from 1984 here.) More than one Mets blog this year made the case for the team to restart the tradition, and though hoping for it to return as part of a scheduled doubleheader might be asking too much, today the team announced that they will indeed be holding a Banner Day at Citi Field in 2012. Fair warning to disgruntled Mets fans who might want to use the opportunity to make a point about the state of the Mets these days: Via Kevin Kernan of the Post, the key word in Dave Howard’s announcement today might have been that it’s a day for banners “celebrating” the team. So unlike the readers who submitted banner ideas to the Times two years ago, you’ll probably need to hold off on the Madoff jokes. A date hasn’t been announced yet, but in the meantime, you’ve got plenty of time to shop for a plain white bedsheet.
