Prior to last season, we declared Cardinals quarterback John Skelton the official favorite athlete of this blog. (Skelton, you see, attended Fordham, Joe’s alma mater, then was drafted by Arizona, Will’s pro team of choice.) Anyway, thanks to an injury to Kevin Kolb, Skelton saw his first action of the season yesterday, completing 20 of 35 passes for 222 yards in an overtime victory over the Rams. The highlight for Skelton: a fourth-quarter drive that culminated with a touchdown pass to Larry Fitzgerald to tie the game with 4:51 remaining. The lowlights: He was sacked in the end zone for a safety in the third quarter, then on the Cardinals’ next possession, was called for intentional grounding in the end zone for another safety. Still, for what it’s worth, Skelton’s quarterback rating yesterday was the highest of any game in his career. The Cardinals won in overtime, by the way, without Skelton even touching the ball: The Rams won the toss but were forced to punt on their first possession, and Patrick Peterson returned said punt 99 yards for the game-winning score.
