St. John’s season officially begins next Monday, at home against William & Mary. So until then, nothing they do on the court actually counts for anything. But having said that, their exhibition victory over Division III St. Mary’s (MD) last night was a whole lot closer than they’d have preferred. The young Johnnies actually trailed by six with less than ten minutes remaining, before rallying back to win 77-70. It should be noted that St. Mary’s reached the Division III quarterfinals last year, but with the beginning of the season less than a week away, it should also be noted that St. John’s missed twenty free throws last night. (Granted, they made thirteen of their final sixteen, but still.) Moe Harkless led St. John’s with twenty points and twelve rebounds. [NYDN]
