Mets owner Fred Wilpon showed up at Mets Spring Training yesterday to assure fans that he will be owning the team for a “very long time.” (Mets fans, it’s fair to say, didn’t not necessarily find this “assuring.”) But his primary contribution was to provide the team with “underdog” T-shirts, presumably because everyone thinks the Mets are going to stink this year. This is a curious thing to tell your team — the reason everyone thinks they stink, after all, is largely because of the owner — and suffice it to say, they didn’t respond well to it. David Wright said “we shouldn’t view ourselves as that,” though manager Terry Collins argued that “when you put it on, if it ticks you off, then we’re doing our job.” The 2012 Mets: the team of infuriating clothing. Faith and Fear in Flushing summed it up thusly: “Which makes J. Wilpon’s message what exactly? That everybody doubts them? That nobody knows their true identity? That if we can just channel that doubt into can-do spirit, boy won’t those bastards from Philadelphia to Miami be surprised? Knute Rockne can rest easy. His motivational mantle is not about to be usurped.” If you need cheering up, hey, look: Spring training photos! Though this might bring you back down again.
