‘Twas a Pleasant Yankees Home Opener

Alex Rodriguez #13, Mark Teixeira #25, Robinson Cano #24 and Raul Ibanez #27 of the New York Yankees celebrate after a three-run RBI double by Nick Swisher
The Yankees win!

What a lovely opening day for Yankee Stadium! It was a beautiful afternoon in New York, and all sorts of celebrities showed up — including the good ol’ Michael Bloomberg/Kermit the Frog tandem. Jorge Posada threw out the first pitch. Hiroki Kuroda rose to the occasion, cruised through the Angels’ lineup — Albert Pujols (1-4), included — and pitched a near-complete game shutout to redeem himself for a shaky first start of the year. Nick Swisher kept New York’s streak of first-inning scoring alive with a three-RBI double. Alex Rodriguez’s excellent day at the plate (from the third spot) included his 630th home run, tying Ken Griffey Jr. for fifth all-time. Curtis Granderson tagged on another run by sneaking a homer over the right field wall. All was well. Not a bad home opener, Yankees, not bad at all. Same time, same place tomorrow, with Phil Hughes and C.J. Wilson on the mound.
