Ike Davis Got Real Angry Last Night

First baseman Ike Davis #29 of the New York Mets (R) argues with first base umpire Manny Gonzalez (C) after Gonzalez called Steve Clevenger #51 of the Chicago Cubs safe at first on a pickoff play during the eighth inning at Wrigley Field on June 26, 2012 in Chicago, Illinois. Gonzalez ejected Davis for arguing.
Ike Davis Smash!

All right, so maybe the call in the ninth inning of the Mets’$2 5-3 loss to the Cubs last night wasn’t quite as bad as the Dewayne Wise call in the Yankees game last night — that honestly might be the worst call we’ve ever seen. How do you call a guy out on a pop up without looking to see if he had the ball? On what possible evidence was that call made? A woman’s intuition? — but it was still pretty bad. Watch it again. Nasty stuff, particularly because umpire Manny Gonzalez tossed Ike Davis out so quickly, costing the Mets a key hitter for their (nonexistent) ninth-inning comeback. We’ve never seen Davis — who is hardly a hothead — so angry, but hey, it’s been a tough year for that guy. It’s been a tough few days for the Mets. Last night was their fourth loss in a row, wiping out a four-game winning streak, and they’re now in third place in the NL East, four and a half games behind the Nationals, and a game out of the Wild Card. (Six teams are within two games of the two Wild Card spots, by the way.) They’ll have a chance to turn it around — and avoid a sweep at the hands of the lowly Cubs — today at 2 p.m. at Wrigley behind Jon Niese. (Man, we wish we were at Wrigley right now.)
