The Mets Had to Put Their Brooms Away This Afternoon

David Wright #5 of the New York Mets reacts after flying out for the final out of the eighth inning against the St. Louis Cardinals at Citi Field on June 4, 2012 in the Flushing neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York City.

As Will noted this morning, Mets fans didn’t have to worry much about the team’s shaky bull pen during the first three games of their wraparound series against St. Louis. Mets starters threw 24 shutout innings during those three games, leaving the pen to throw just three innings, all last night. (They’d allow one run in those three innings.) Anyway, today came a reminder of the Mets’ bull pen issues: After Dillon Gee went seven innings and Scott Hairston tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with a pinch-hit two-run homer, Jon Rauch entered the game — and promptly allowed a two-run home run to Allen Craig, the third batter he faced. (After the game, Terry Collins said Rauch has been experiencing “tenderness” in his elbow and that “we’re going to look at it.”) And though the Mets would cut the Cardinals’ lead to one in the bottom half the inning, David Wright lined out with the tying run at third to end the eighth, and they couldn’t push across a run in the ninth. Final score: Cardinals 5, Mets 4. More disappointing news: According to Adam Rubin, Johan Santana had to pull out of taping a Top Ten List for the Late Show, since there was no time to do it before he accompanied the team to Washington.
