The trading deadline has just passed, and as almost everyone predicted, neither the Mets nor the Yankees made any major moves, major or minor. The Yankees, if you believe Jim Bowden (and hey, who wouldn’t?), were close to getting Ryan Dempster from the Cubs, but the Rangers swiped him away at the last minute, so they “settled” for trading for Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Casey McGehee. They gave up Chad Qualls, whom we know you will miss. This could mean something about the Yankees’ worries about Alex Rodriguez coming back in a timely fashion, or maybe the Yankees were just bored. Anyway, there could be more trades after the waiver deadline, but nothing major. So, everybody rest easy: Derek Jeter remains a Yankee! That was close.
