Everybody Cheer Today for Collin McHugh

Here’s a nice Mets story.

The Mets are pretty much unwatchable right now — they’ve lost four in a row and twelve of their last sixteen — and everyone involved with the team, employee, fan, or mascot, is just waiting for the season to end. So you have to take your nice stories where you can get them. At 1 p.m. today — you know, like, now — Collin McHugh will make his Major League debut for the Mets, and this is exactly the sort of chap you cheer for. He’s bounced around the minor leagues for four years after being an eighteenth-round pick, he’s waited his turn as higher profile prospects zoomed past him despite inferior production and, more to the point, he has an extremely entertaining, likable, and informative blog. (He’s on Twitter, too.) A month ago, he wrote about how hard it is when people always ask him and other minor leaguers “When you moving up?” Today, he’s moving up, to the bigs; with Johan Santana out for the year, he’ll have the opportunity to stay there. The Mets, in the second half, have given their fans very little to cheer for. But there is this, and this is at least something. Go get ‘em, Collin.
