Team USA Wins Gold, But Boy, It Wasn’t Easy

Kevin Durant #5, Kobe Bryant #10 and LeBron James #6 of the USA Men's Senior National Team during a break against Brazil at the Verizon Center on July 16, 2012 in Washington, DC.
Your champs.

As talented as the US men’s basketball team has been this whole Olympic tournament, it hasn’t always been that much fun to watch them: They’ve just been blowing everybody out to the point of boredom. That was definitely not a problem in the Gold Medal Game today, though, which ended in a 107-100 win over Spain that made everybody sweat. The US was only up by one going into the fourth quarter, and actually trailed after that, but Chris Paul, Kevin Durant, Kobe Bryant and especially LeBron James finally pulled away. Durant led the US with 30 points, but it was a LeBron trey with two minutes left that put the game away. (Pretty nice year for LeBron.) The US defense was particularly poor the whole game until that fourth quarter, finally stopping Spain and a very tough Pau Gasol. It was awfully hairy there for a while. It’s the last Olympics for Kobe and for coach Mike Krzyzewski, who ends his team USA reign with a record of 62-1. That’s pretty good. Carmelo Anthony also hurt his ankle in the fourth, but he should be fine. Now you can go back to watching these guys all trying to beat each other’s brains in again when the NBA starts in a couple of months. USA! USA!
