USA Women’s Soccer Wins Gold Medal

US midfielder Carli Lloyd celebrates scoring a goal during the final of the women's football competition of the London 2012 Olympic Games on August 9, 2012 at Wembley stadium in London.
YAY!

If you have any guilt issues cheering for the United States in Olympic men’s basketball – what, with the overall dominance and everything – then the women’s soccer team is for you. Team USA just won a thrilling 2-1 game over Japan to win the Gold Medal, and it was just terrific all around. Carli Lloyd scored two goals and was the ostensible hero, but goalkeeper Hope Solo made two jaw-dropping saves to hold onto the lead, including a brilliant one with only 10 minutes left. Team USA avenges its World Cup loss just last year to Japan and has now won four of the five women’s soccer Gold Medals in Olympic history. It’s not quite as much of a breakthrough as the famous 1999 World Cup win … but it’s still pretty awesome. USA! USA! USA! (You have no idea how hard it’s been not to end every post like that this fortnight. The Olympics are almost over, people.)
