After weeks of speculation about the future of Keith Hernandez’s mustache, Neil Best of Newsday reports that the SNY announcer will indeed shave off his ‘stache prior to the Mets’ final home game one week from today. In 2007, an American Mustache Institute poll named Hernandez’s the best sports mustache of all-time. But the former first baseman says that now that he’s no longer contractually obligated to use Just for Men on his graying ‘stache, the time has come to try a new look. Said Hernandez to Newsday: “It just looked noticeable that I’m gray and this is my true color and that’s probably one of the reasons why — just to shave it off and see how it looks.” At least its demise will help a good cause: Via Richard Sandomir, Schick is sponsoring the shaving and will donate $5,000 to the Jacqueline Hernandez Adult Day Health Center, a facility for Alzheimer’s patients at Brooklyn’s Cobble Hill Health Center that’s named for Hernandez’s mom. Here, now, a celebration of the glorious career of Hernandez’s award-winning upper-lip hair.
