Giants Take 2-0 World Series Lead

San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner throws during the first inning of Game 2 of baseball's World Series against the Detroit Tigers Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012, in San Francisco.
Looking good in San Fran.

There is a temptation to say that the San Francisco Giants just have the feel of a World Champion after their 2–0 win over the Detroit Tigers last night. They’re catching all the breaks, from that Hunter Pence triple-hit-broken-bat business in Game Seven of the NLCS to the statistical impossibility that were three Pablo Sandoval homers in Game One of the World Series to last night, when a sacrifice bunt appeared to be going foul but stayed fair and led to a cheap but crucial run in the seventh inning. On one hand, yes, the World Series winner almost always has some luck on their side. On the other, these things can turn in an instant, as anyone who watched last year’s World Series can tell you. Anyway, Madison Bumgarner was terrific after a rough NLDS and NLCS, and the Giants are up 2-0 heading to Detroit for three games. They won’t see Justin Verlander until Game 5, so they can take care of this without him pitching again. Game Three is Saturday night, 8 p.m. We don’t care if it’s San Francisco and Detroit, or that you’re disappointed the Yankees didn’t make it. (We can understand.) This is the World Series. You should be watching it. It’s going to be freezing and sad without baseball before you know it.
