Well, that didn’t take very long. Avery Johnson led the Brooklyn Nets to an 11-4 record in November, good enough to earn him the Eastern Conference Coach of the Month award. You might say things headed downhill thereafter: The team has since plummeted to 14-14, and superstar Deron Williams has struggled mightily and voiced discomfort with his coach’s system. Johnson made recent efforts to adapt that system, but now, even sooner than we all expected, he is done. Adrian Wojnarowski, as is his wont, broke the news this afternoon. Assistant coach P.J. Carlesimo will take over as head coach in an interim capacity, with no outside replacement yet indicated. Carlesimo’s a veteran head coach and might very well be the man for the job (and yes, he is also the man once wrung around the neck by Latrell Sprewell), but you’ll be hearing whispers of many other, more legendary names — Jerry Sloan, probably even Phil Jackson — in the near future. MADNESS!
