The Yankees Wait on Youkilis, Ichiro Waits on the Yankees

Kevin Youkilis #20 of the Chicago White Sox fields a ball against the Cleveland Indians at U.S. Cellular Field on September 25, 2012 in Chicago, Illinois. The Indians defeated the White Sox 4-3.
Kevin Youkilis.

This has been dragging on for a couple days now, but sooner or later, folks will have to make some decisions. Right? History with the Red Sox aside, Kevin Youkilis seems like a pretty clean fit with the Yankees. New York needs an everyday third baseman with Alex Rodriguez’s injury shelving him into 2013, and Youkilis’s other options (Cleveland in particular) seem to be drying up. Oh, and Uncle Youkilis is really enthusiastic about the whole arrangement. As of right now, though, Youkilis has yet to accept New York’s one-year, $12 million offer. They’re waiting.

Also waiting: Ichiro Suzuki. Well, he was waiting on the Yankees to make him an offer, and now it’s unclear who’s waiting on who. Whatever the case, reports indicate that the two parties are close to finalizing a one-year deal, surely for less than the $17 million he made last season. When and if all that gets done, the next move will be to flesh out the outfield with some right-handed hitting and, ideally, a bit more bat power (they’ve got the arm power covered, though Curtis Granderson may or may not be on the trading block). Until then … we wait.
