If there’s a preschooler in your life, you know the Doodlebops, the bubblegum Canadian rockers who star in their own show on Playhouse Disney. As the made-for-TV siblings, played by the bizarrely costumed, brightly colored Lisa Lennox (Deedee), Jonathan Wexler (Moe, who has an obsession with pulling on a suspended rope), and Chad McNamara (Rooney), embark on their first American tour (coming to the Garden on September 30 and October 1), they were happy to answer a few questions—but only in character.
Your look is, um, interesting. Are you human?
Deedee: We are human. We just dress up.
But your hands are all spongy and puffy.
Deedee: We added that as something different. Like the guy in Kiss who has a crazy tongue.
Whatever it is, it’s working: You’ve just taken the Wiggles’ preschool prime-time spot on the Disney Channel. Any thoughts about that?
Deedee: I’m not opposed to having their time slot.
Rooney: We just hope to have what they have one day.
And tickets to your Madison Square Garden shows are going for crazy prices on eBay.
Deedee: We’re selling out everywhere. We had no idea that we would be going around the world. We just wanted to start a band.
I’ve got to ask about your hair—it looks like a strawberry taffy flip.
Deedee: Thanks. I put highlights in and took out some of the volume. I use a tube of hairspray, and it does wonders.
Moe, what’s with your blood-red shag, Moe? And Rooney—the spongy sky-blue dreads?
Moe: Mine is Kiss-inspired.
Rooney: I was born with normal hair, but I wanted to spice it up.
What would kids be surprised to learn about you?
Moe: I like underground hip-hop.
And why on earth do you pull the rope on the show?
You know you’re going to get soaked every time. Moe: It’s really fun and cool and funny. I’m waiting for the water not to fall one day.
That sounds like a young person’s answer. How old are you?
Moe: Ummmm, we don’t really talk about that.
