‘Out’ Magazine Releases Power List, Underestimates ‘Times’ Gaiety

No, Dave Annable and Matthew Rhys, the hotties from Brothers and Sisters, are not gay. They’re just on the cover of Out Magazine because the executive producer of their hit show, Jon Robin Baitz Greg Berlanti, is on the magazine’s annual Power List (blast! Snookered by the ol’ gay-magazine bait and switch again!). You remember last year, when Out editor Aaron Hicklin put Jodie Foster and Anderson Cooper on the cover of this issue, even though neither had officially come out? Well, since then, Foster publicly acknowledged her longtime partner, and people got bored of speculation about Anderson’s sexuality. (Ha! Kidding. The gays will never tire of it.) So this year’s issue instead focuses mostly on men and women who are open about their orientation. Like Ellen DeGeneres (who tops the list), Massachusetts congressman Barney Frank, and Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner. Once again, our favorites, the New York Times gay mafia, are near the top of the list, including Richard Berke, Ben Brantley, Frank Bruni, Stuart Elliot, Patrick Healy, Adam Nagourney, Horacio Silva, Stefano Tonchi, and Eric Wilson. But come on, Out editors — there are hordes of other gays working in high-powered positions at the Times. You could only come up with nine? Have you slept with no one lately?
