Carving out a niche in Fox News’ afternoon programming, Megyn Kelly is returning from maternity and will get her own show, the network announced this afternoon. The spunky legal expert, who used to host America’s Newsroom with Bill Hemmer, will take over the 1 to 3 p.m. slot from current Live Desk hosts Martha MacCallum and Trace Gallagher. (MacCallum will go to the morning to join Hemmer, and Fox had no word on what will happen to Gallagher, though he’ll stay at the network.) The as-yet unnamed show will cover breaking news, feature interviews, and include her “Kelly’s Court” legal segment. Kelly, who appears regularly on Bill O’Reilly’s show, was likely selected to inject some personality into the afternoon hours, when other cable-news networks shift into general headline coverage or even paid advertisements. Her main personality rival will be Andrea Mitchell on MSNBC, whose political show occupies the 1 to 2 p.m. hour.
