New York Is More Than Happy to Break Up Your Civil Union

New York doesn’t allow its gay couples to marry. It doesn’t allow them to form civil unions. But from now on it’ll be glad to annul any such unions created out of state, according to an appellate court. The case concerned two Schenectady women who entered into a civil union in Vermont in 2003. In 2008, the two women asked a Schenectady court to annul the union, but the judge refused, saying that “the state has no legal framework to recognize a legal relationship between same-sex partners or to dissolve such unions.” A ruling last week reversed this decision, and now the two women can finally be released from their unhappy partnership, free to marry whomever they want. Except women.
