Since a security guard ended his post protecting artist Shepard Fairey’s (legal) mural on the Deitch Projects–owned wall at the corner of Houston and Bowery, the work has been aggressively defaced by graffiti artists and beaten-in by New Yorkers, creating large holes that required wall repairs last week. Now that the holes have been patched up, somebody else — or perhaps the same rebel — made his feelings known, writing over the wall patches: “Bring back the Haring,” referring to the neon, less-defaced Keith Haring mural that previously held that spot.
