The shutdown-averting budget compromise that will keep the government running all the way to September 30 was passed by the House this afternoon on a 260–167 vote. Because of defections among Republicans who didn’t feel that the $38.5 billion in cuts were deep enough actually, the CBO concluded yesterday that only a measly $352 million will be sliced off of the budget this fiscal year Speaker John Boehner needed Democratic votes to pass the bill. Those votes materialized after all, this was a bill hammered out by Harry Reid and Barack Obama as well but according to Politico, Democrats waited until “the final minute” to cast them in order to “milk the crisis facing the GOP.”
