Suicide Attack Kills at Least 82 Soldiers in Pakistan

The Pakistan Taliban has taken responsibility for a suicide attack this morning at a military facility in northwest Pakistan that, as of now, has killed 82 paramilitary soldiers, claiming that it was retaliation for the death of Osama bin Laden. But Pakistani officials are dubious — they believe the bombing was carried out by a Taliban splinter group and has more to do with the country’s ongoing campaign against radical militants. Indeed, the Pakistani military would be a strange target for retaliation over the Al Qaeda leader’s death, since they had nothing to do with the raid that killed him, and might have even tried to shelter him. Whatever the cause, the brutal attack is a reminder that while some in Pakistan may be sympathetic to Al Qaeda, the country is also embroiled in its own war against terror as well.
