James “Whitey” Bulger, the accused murderer arrested Wednesday after sixteen years on the lam, agreed on Thursday to go back home to Boston, where he allegedly ran a gang over a decade ago, to face the litany of charges against him. He’s reported to be not only cooperating with authorities, but practically in good spirits: U.S. Attorney Robert Dugdale said Bulger “appeared healthy, vibrant and to know what’s going on.” When a judge asked Bulger if he had read the indictments against him, he said, “I got them all here. It will take me quite a while to finish these, but I know them pretty well.”
Meanwhile, according to the New York Times, Bulger and girlfriend Catherine Greig had been living a life in disguise, using the pseudonyms Charlie and Carol Gasko. Apparently that life was relatively pleasant:
That said, Charlie also had a reputation as the neighborhood “rageaholic.” Fake I.D.s, over $800,000 in cash, and 30 firearms — including pistols, shotguns, and rifles — were found at the Gasko apartment.
