Michele Bachmann Fears the End of Light Bulbs As We Know Them

The “photogenic” presidential candidate and congresswoman Michele Bachmann has long supported an anti-sustainability movement fueled by paranoia over an almost twenty-year-old U.N. plan for protecting the environment. Agenda 21, signed by the United States but never ratified by the Senate, lays out international goals for saving the Earth, but for conservatives of Bachmann’s ilk, it’s a conspiratorial course of action and “a gateway to a global government built on a radical doctrine of secular environmentalism,” as Mother Jones reports today. For Bachmann, energy-saving light bulbs and high-speed rails are only the beginning — the end, as she put it in 2003, is a “brave new world.”

That means no more resources for anyone, no more new light bulbs, and even the threat of population reduction. As she explained about Democrats in Congress, “They want Americans to take transit and move to the inner cities. They want Americans to move to the urban core, live in tenements, [and] take light rail to their government jobs. That’s their vision for America.” And in the dark.
