In honor of M’bura, a 5-month-old okapi calf recently unveiled to Bronx Zoo visitors for the first time, here are some fun things we just learned about okapi:
- They look like unfinished zebras, but are actually more closely related to giraffes.
- They don’t defecate for the first four to eight weeks of their lives, which sounds incredibly uncomfortable.
- Their gestation period is 14.5 months, which also sounds incredibly uncomfortable.
In conclusion, okapis are weird animals. Here is a video of M’bura showing off her freakishly long tongue.
