A United Express flight out of Atlanta carrying 71 passengers plus crew was forced to make an emergency landing at Newark Liberty International Airport Monday night owing to a problem with the plane’s front landing gear. “The plane made a so-called belly landing at 6:20 p.m. onto a runway that had been coated in flame-retardant foam,” reports MyFoxNY. It sounds like the plane made a terrifying Chesley* Sullenberger–style safe landing, although our experience with belly landings is limited to awkward jumps into swimming pools.
*An earlier version of this article referred to Mr. Sullenberger as “Chelsea.”
