Arthur Brisbane’s term as ombudsman at the New York Times will be over in September after two years, reports Erik Wemple at the Washington Post. Brisbane, the paper’s fourth public editor, said he decided last fall not to exercise his potential one-year contract extension, but he wasn’t asked to by his bosses either. As noted by Wemple, Brisbane’s most memorable moment so far was the widely mocked column “Should The Times Be a Truth Vigilante?” to which even Times executive editor Jill Abramson responded with a frustrated duh. He has a few months left to top that one for quotability, but it won’t be easy.
