Two flights were forced to return to Newark Airport this weekend, but there was some even scarier plane-related activity out on Long Island. On Sunday a small plane crashed in a residential neighborhood in Shirley, NY, killing the pilot and injuring the two passengers. The New York Times reports that the plane, which crashed shortly after takeoff, damaged a few trees, one car, and a large trash bin, but narrowly missed several homes. A witness says the Socata TB10 was “like a fireball as soon as it hit the ground.” Neighbors were able to save the passengers by putting out the flames with garden hoses, but couldn’t reach the pilot in time.
