Stacey Hessler, the 39-year-old mom who rose to Occupy-era fame (and New York Post infamy) for leaving her four children (who are all between eight and 18-years-old) and husband in Florida to join the movement in Zuccotti Park, is divorcing her spouse, Curtiss, a former Bank of America financial adviser. And, like many a divorcee, she’ll be walking away with some of his capitalist assets. Think of it as redistribution of wealth, because it’s more fun that way:
The divorce settlement, filed Oct. 16, awards Occu-Mom the $79,585 fund and a $5,800 bank account. Her total take: $85,385. The filing lists Curtiss’ occupation as banker and says he earns $65,000 a year. Her job is listed in court papers as “protester” and her employer as “Occupy Wall Street.” Annual salary: $0. Divorce papers cite “irreconcilable differences” for the split, saying the 19-year marriage “is irretrievably broken.”
The Post reports that Hessler remains New York-based, and had recently set up camp in front of a Wells Fargo bank branch in the Financial District. Her husband will receive primary custody of the kids. Asked last year about her decision to give up her white picket fence in suburban DeLand for the wrought-iron ones of New York’s public spaces, Hessler said, “Military people leave their families all the time, so why should I feel bad? I’m fighting for a better world.” Fair enough.
