Not to be outdone by New Jersey, Staten Island’s Community Education Council voted on Monday to station armed guards at borough schools, using 300 to 500 retired police officers to staff the project. But it’s not going to happen. Schools chancellor Dennis Walcott was adamant on that point. “It’s not happening. Plain and simple … I can’t be any clearer than that.” And since he has veto power over the council’s decisions, that would appear to be that.
